Digg This.

Not too far long ago I was in the process of setting up a Sex Network along the guidelines of 9rules. I scratched the idea to put all my focus into 9rules and I'm glad I did because there was actually no reason to start such a network when Netscape has so graciously decided to provide me with a Sex Channel where I can get all the latest porn at the push of a button.

Sure there are precautionary measures such as a confirmation page letting you know that you are entering a mature section of the site along with these guidelines.

The Sex channel is intended to be a place for linking to stories about sex and sexuality and for mature discussion of these topics by a mature audience. Please avoid linking to pornography or other materials that are not fitting within this context.

But that doesn't stop porn webmasters from posting their wares and it surely won't stop Netscapers from voting those entries to the top. In the world of user-generated content you can't always control the content that users post, but you sure can help guide them and Netscape has done a wonderful job of guiding its users and readers towards the content that Junior probably shouldn't be viewing.

Is it wrong to have such material available on the web? Of course not. I love porn just as much as Tyme does, but I don't think it's appropriate for a large site like Netscape. It does show though that although it's nice to have a democratic site where the users pick the content, there should still be measures in place to keep things down a certain path.

A great example of this occurring on 9rules can be found in Josue's note titled Fuck Bush. Not exactly the type of words you want to always see on the homepage of your website, but the title doesn't do justice to the ensuing conversation and therefore it remained unchanged. However, it's important to make sure the homepage doesn't get loaded with titles like this and that's where the "Overlords" come in and to make sure the site is still on the right path.

Then again, if you are going to try and beat Digg you need every edge you can get.

Digg this for humanity.

I can't think of the last time I saw 'pr0n' typed out. I agree though, to have a big content provider move into an area like this can not do the company much good. I bet they'll make some decent change on the adsense mixed in there, though.

Well the interesting thing is you can't have porn in Google's TOS, but I doubt Google would man up and discontinue showing ads on the site because of it.

I suppose it might not qualify since it's simply pointing to the porn. In any case, you may be right. I'd like to see someone question Google on it, too.

I think you're correct in that the overlords shouldn't censor the content. Rather it should be an act of the community that the page serves. If people don't like it/don't want it--whatever the "it" of the moment is--around they'll speak up, or leave.

In a real community, the best leaders provide guidance rather than punishment.

All I can say is I use Netscape a lot and that section always comes in handy.
It's labeled as adult material, so I don't see any issues having it there.
