I'm getting ready to launch a new store in the next month or so, and I'd like to know the best methods of marketing it. What have you done and what works for you? and most importantly what should I stay away from?

Avoid folks saying they'll get you into 500000 search engines for $99.95. Like the plague. They're incompetent or worse.

Outside of that, the best things you can do include:

- Hire someone to help you market your store.
- Spend $.25/click on Adwords on very specific phrases, that are highly focused on what you sell.
- Make sure your store is search engine friendly.
- Be patient! It takes a long, long time for a store to catch on.

You can, of course, try things like e-mail marketing. But I can't say much about that without more detail...

Word of mouth.

Email marketing could be effective. I actually just responded to another note regarding lead generation marketing. I work for an agency in which we can help drive traffic to your storefront.

Lead generation marketing is also an effective form of marketing pending what type of offers you may have. This will not only drive traffic to your site but it will be highly targeted and simultaneously developing a database of people that have essentially raised their hands saying "im in interested in your product or service"

Try a blog centered on topics related to what you sell.

I know its work, but you can start sending serious traffic anywhere on the web with a properly built blog and properly written and targeted content.

There are far better solutions for marketing a site and getting near instant traffic, even if it is an "unmarketable" store.

Don't rely on the store itself to generate interest, links, rankings and traffic. Then it will take forever to become popular.

Build the store, then blog about topics, news, products, interesting angles related to the products in the store and use 2.0 marketing to generate traffic.

I have some blog marketing resources I posted about that can get you started for free, netting you really good amounts of targeted, free traffic.
