So my big theory is that Web 2.0 is just the technological boom started by people who were too young to join in on the Web 1.0 dotcom fun in the late 90s. People like myself (in early 20s) were still in middle school and high school in the mid-to-late 1990s so we couldn't participate, and now that we're out of college we're ready to start our own companies and "get things right" after watching what everybody was doing wrong.

I was thinking about this today too. I see the generational theory Mike, that makes sense. I was thinking it may have to do with the extremity of the 1.0 rise and fall, and that perhaps 2.0 is the happy medium.

Trying to define Web 2.0 is getting somewhat strained and tiresome imo. What's important is the essence of the concept, ie how the apps and sites that are coming out influence your everyday life, rather than continually defining what Web 2.0 is! So Ryan is right in a way, it really is nothing, an empty title. Just a bunch of new exciting things coming out at around the same time that people want to lump together.

I like to think of it like unicorns... it's a webby fairy tale and a marketing spin dollop on the side. Then again I've been about a while so may be more jaded about another boom appearing ;) The way I see it. web 2.0 is just a label for the natural evolution of the web and a good net to catch all the goodness going on.
