Hey all,

Would love to hear about how others have developed Social Networks... what are things that need to be considered... advice, suggestions, ect...

I've started one here for the Adopted peoples:

http://www.adoptedonline.com

There are a number of questions that I've got, and I would love your suggestions / advice:

1. User Profiles: Let them customize? Or not. I think it's the classic "FaceBook-esque" look and feel vs. MySpace craziness. Your thoughts? We've opened css-editing for right now... but not sure if we should keep it...

2. Legal issues: What are the dangers and possible issues that a social network is going to bring? What should we be looking to avoid or what can we expect? (How much does a good internet lawyer cost...?)

3. Growth: Grassroots-style? Or pay for some advertising. What has worked for you guys?

4. Adsense or not to adsense...? We've got some adsense right now, but, it's not paying beans. Anyone know what it "takes" to "live" off google adsense? Is it even worth it to use it and make your site look all nastified with the googlish?

5. Anything else?

Thanks all. This is fun. But man, it's tiring...

You will need to write some type of privacy policy, and a terms of service.

I see that there might be legal issues with the potential of privacy invasion, by adoptees, seeking birth parents, and vice-versa, along with other family members such as siblings.

Not all involved parties want to be found.

You will need to research that aspect, thoroughly, and might even get the advice of an attorney...search around for fees, etc.

A minimum age of 18 is a must, in my opinion, just for legal reasons, alone.

My opinions...

I would let them customize the profile to an extent, but I really don't like on myspace when people choose a background color that is 2 shades off from the text. Facebook lets you customize now, but there are limitations.

I am not sure about legal issues with the site. I would think you might need a minimum age for your site and to monitor or restrict communication between people over 18 and people under 18...And I have seen some social networking sites where you must be at least 13 to sign up. I'm not sure why though.

4. Adsense or not to adsense...? We've got some adsense right now, but, it's not paying beans. Anyone know what it "takes" to "live" off google adsense? Is it even worth it to use it and make your site look all nastified with the googlish?

My opinion:
1)During first 2-3 months (when social network is online) you need to increase traffic (visitors, users, surfers)
2)Exchange links - get more and more pr
3)Sell place for advertising (not google adsense) some banners in particular place in template
4)Then you can add Google Adsense.
sorry for my English))))
