Mike's post on finding music with Google reminded me of something I came across a year back. It's a bit more perverse: How to Google webcam feeds.
Try entering this into Google:
inurl:/view/index.shtml
Or:
inurl:"ViewerFrame?Mode="
Standard software that allows you to view your cam feed over the web works just like a webpage: when you enter the URL to view the webcam you're requesting an HTML document, stored on your computer, which incorporates the webcam feed. So, when we know the folder- and filenames of standard webcam software we can use our dear uncle Google to search for that particular string. If preventive measures haven't been taken, the Googlecrawlers have probably found those documents.
Scary, huh?

Haha, that's creepy. I've always said people expose more of themselves than they realize. Caution on the internet is not a bad thing.

I at first thought you were asking us this question and I was wondering what was up with that.

@Tyme - They say the most common security vulnerability is simply that people don't set passwords.
@cooper - Haha. That would've been a bit creepy.

Anyone test this and find some good ones? And by "good ones" you know what I mean.

Tried the searches. However, after about 10 pages Google told me it thought I was acting too much like a spybot or something, so it wouldn't let me search past 10 pages.
Weird.

I got that too, and I didn't find any good ones. The most exciting one was a room with a parrot ... whippee. I do remember having found a pan-able/zoomable camera in a bedroom when I originally discovered this trick though (second search string is for those kinds of cameras).
Edit: by those kinds I mean controllable cameras.

Wait -- you mean I was actually controlling those cameras? I was playing around with that and kept thinking "You know, this has to be a gif or something, like subservient chicken.

If this turns in to a modern version of Hitchcock's Rear Window, give me a shout ;)

I remember this trick a while ago. I found a man called Piet's (alas, not Mondrian) webcam, that had a chat applet. He was a nice dutch man that had flowers on his windowsill.

Sounds like something Jean-Pierre Jeunet might make a movie about.

Do these people realize all their webcams are being broadcast to the internet?

Many of these are public cameras showing traffic or something of the kind, those are intentionally left open. But others are private cameras where the owners are oblivious of Google's potential to find them.

So I found this note very interesting, and it made me think.. Hey, I have an iSight in my iMac. Why can't I have a webcam?
So I did some digging, and found a pretty cool app called evocam for OSX. Built in web server, ability to upload captures on a timed basis or motion basis, wicked cool, password protection, etc.
So I didn't think anything of it, put the image on my site that gets refreshed every minute, added a link to the live view (password protected) for myself, totally cool.
But.. I haven't told my wife yet. I am thinking she will think its totally uncool.

Had to have wife quit the app, the streaming webcam feature was killing my Vonage. But, I'll still keep the ftp uploads every minute.

So I found I could set the app I am using to keep a rolling set of 30 files. Add lightbox grouping and you have a nice "Last 30" minutes of my kitchen. And everyone who is anyone knows how leet my kitchen is.

O_O wah, disturbing. I can actually see live webcams just like this.
I do worry about such privacy issues now >_>
