Firefox really bogs down my machine - Is it just me?

Yeah, so lately FF gets really bogged down on my computer.
It's to the point that I'm braking out IE6 (gasp - yeah, too lazy to update my machine) for some websites (like ESPN FF).
I'm guessing this is due to memory leaks, is there any fix that some of you know of? My wife is already talking about moving to IE7 fulltime, and so have some other formerly die hard FF users that I know...

Good thinking, I'm going to drop some of the extra fluff that I no longer use...
Done. Nice, great results. Not sure about the boggin' down issue, but it startsup a helluva lot faster and sems to be a bit more responsive...

You said you are too lazy to update... Does that include Firefox? What version are you running? Many of those memory-related issues have been fixed in recent versions.

Hey WebMajor, I'm on 2.0.0.6. I just checked for an update with its built in checker and it said "No Updates!".

FireFox can hog a lot of memory on Windows, especially if you have a lot of extensions installed. On my mac I only have about 4 extensions and it seems to run quite fast.

It depends on what I'm doing... it's usually blazing fast unless I have a LOT of media rich content up and then it just drags ass.

It all depends on the amount of extensions that you have installed. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to set up a Portable Firefox instance for web development and such (I'll just deal with my slow browser because I like using my extensions to inspect/research random websites as I browse).

The last patch seems dreadful. I hate to admit it but I get better performance from Internet Explorer. I'd like to go back to the previous version but it was a security patch and I'm afraid that would be unsafe.

That's the biggest issue for me. If a Youtube video or even a simple flash animation is running, I notice the hit. Kind of crappy when you are actually working on a site that has any of these components!

Yes, Firefox has been hurting lately. It has turned into just a development tool for me. I use Konqueror/Epiphany on Linux and I have been playing with K-Meleon on Windows. Upcoming Opera 9.5 is also something to look out for.

Oh yeah, that reminds me...any page with Flash (especially a Flash video combined with Flash ads) on it just lags up Firefox. I think thats more of a Flash problem then a Firefox problem though.

I got a new computer last month and Firefox works fine on it, but I had to stop using it except for page checking on my old one. It was ok for simple browsing, butm as other people have said, if I tried to watch a video or view a page which contained Flash it became impossibly slow.

Firefox always craps out on my work pc, but runs just fine on my Mac at home. I had this problem even before I added a bunch of extensions, I don't know why it's such a hog.
