Using bbpress for more than forums?

I was wondering how many people here use bbpress for more then forums? Would you say that this is a good starting point for integrating users into your site.

We use it to power my.9r which is definitely more than just forums. The way it is structured allows us to easily expand on it and create almost anything we want from the my.9r Store to Clips.

Do you write everything as plugins?

No we couldn't since we had to put our own hooks into the system and development was faster without trying to fit everything within the bbpress ecosystem. However, there are a ton of great plugins available for bbpress that if you haven't already looked at I suggest you check out because they are all very customizable.

Kineda uses a wordpress/bbpress hybrid.
With bbpress, I'm able to expand the community beyond Wordpress comments with personalized user pages, rankings, etc.
And it's nice that the two systems play well together. I've been able to customize bbpress to use the same user system as well as design from Wordpress. Users have no idea they're on two entirely different platforms.
Now if I could only pull off all the extra little goodies that 9rules does here. ;)
