I don't think so. I think Google's just streamlining the content you have with the searches it's preforming.

A lot of blogs with paid links don't really have content to match what they are selling in the first place. It's all just an elaborate ploy to make as much money as possible from what they have. Google's just gotten smarter and up the game a bit.

some people reported that their pagerank dropped because of paid links. is that true?

Mine went up so I do not think it was only about paid links. I think it has to do with search engine results because on the whole (at least for me) they have improved. Drastically. I noticed I am getting more traffic from Google as well (people searching for "Tyme" can actually find me easily now instead of Google pulling every site that happens to use tyme as a play on time).

yes it is true. a lot of sites whose focus was search engine optimization also saw a drop according to some SEO bloggers

There are a lot of new ways to generate traffic. Viral marketing, affiliate marketing, advertising. Basically, not putting all your eggs in one basket (Google). Of course, Google is the best, or one of the best ways to get traffic, but you should not rely on one source of traffic, or income for that matter, especially because they are in control of if/when/how much money you make!

We got upped from a 4 to a 5. Which is nice and all, but I'm not sure why.

I wouldn't bet on it lasting. Seems like Google is just playing with their toys. Their parents will come in and clean up the room at the end of the day.

I don't think they are done yet.

Last time they did a major update my blog went up and down between 4 and 5 for quite a long time before they finally decided to stop at 5.

I've had 5 since - until the other day when it dropped to 4. I'm not worried though.

I can't do anything about it anyway - other than blog on and hoping for more regular visitor and links :-)

Yeah, 9rules used to have a really high pagerank, 8 or 9. Now they are down to 6. What up with that?

I think the pagerank updates are a result of internal Friday afternoon bets to see how many blog posts they can generate by changing the algorithms slightly. ;)

Josh,

I fully appreciate that but it's a term I use in my life all the time, even vocally. But I understand your "irk" because I too have similar annoyances.

The reason I favour "discuss" is because it was an old school way of encouraging debate on literary exam papers, so I attempt to derive humour from taking it out of context. Not always succesfully I might add!

My site is still a 5, like it's been for quite a while. It's still a pointless number which folks obsess about, just like it's been for quite a while. :)

(As an aside, while I realize doing so has reached almost legendary status in forums, saying "Discuss." at the end of a post in a discussion forum is a bit oxymoronic, isn't it? Please don't take that as an attack on you, seopher; it's just the act itself that irks me, and it always has.)

It's the principle David, people look at your pagerank as a metric for how valuable your site is. It upsets me to think that it's becoming less valuable - especially when the truth is that it's never been so proserous.

My PR has been a constant 4 for a while now. PR is affected by internal linking (common problem among forums & community site) and content change (more common among smaller site). There's probably (if not definitely) a lot more at play though.

It looks like Google is taking a good hard kick at my nether-regions in this latest Pagerank update :(

It looks a lot like Seopher.com is dropping from PR5 to PR3. I do wonder whether this is a direct result of leaving the 9rules community?
