In theory Pownce is a great idea, but it's still a little buggy. I usually have trouble logging in and the Air app is flaky. Twitter's not perfect either, but I use it more just because I had it first, I guess. Plus there are so many more people who use it.
I jumped on the Pownce boat for a while with a few other 9r users, and in theory I'd rather use Pownce than Twitter. But like Alex said, frankly it sucks — largely due to bugs and few people using it. Twitter's buggy and lacking features, but at least there are people there.
So I migrated to Twitter and hardly ever check Pownce anymore.
Twitter. I tried Pownce when it first came out but there was nobody else using it and I really didn't care for the service. Twitter offers a much nicer experience in my eyes (I haven't noticed downtime in a while) and Twitterrific is great.
I think I have a Pownce account that is gathering dust. I use Twitter and for the reason that everyone I know is on Twitter.
A few weeks ago I did a workshop with the guys from Jaiku (which was recently bought by Google) and it looked even better than Twitter. The reason I didn't switch? My friends are on Twitter.
i use twitter more than pownce. just nothing over @ pownce to get excited about. also, twitter's feeds update automatically whereas you have to refresh pownce.
the other thing that i do not like about pownce is the timezone they use for posts in the rss feeds. it appears to be completely different from that of any other feed, which ends up screwing up lifestream-like aggregation.
the ability to post via various devices is one the best features of twitter. i twitter a lot via sms. if pownce can beat that than pownce is my choice. i wonder what will happen if twitter copies pownce features. that will be AMAZING.

Right now I use twitter, because everyone can get in, so there are more people using it.

I use Twitter. Pownce was OK, but it did too much, and the app sucked, to be frank.

I use twitter because I both like it better since all my "friends" use it and because it is a better application overall.

Twitter. One, because I can use it from phone and existing IM, and secondly because using Pownce involves more decisions to use.
