I am wondering whether to send an auto reply to my customers who submit an inquiry into my company.
I for one hate auto-replies, I'm all like: "I know I submitted a form why are you telling me that?" But I'm sure there are people do enjoy receiving one.
How do you handle the issue?

Just providing a good after-form display on the website should be enough for most people. Some form are so dire... You fill it in and press submit and you get a blank page, or taken back to the home page... No use to the user.
You could always be pnickity and whack a "Do you want to be notified by email when we receive the contents of this form?" checkbox =)

Yeah, when I get an email that says "we got your message and we'll get back to you" I usually just delete. That being said, I think the contact form on my site sends out a confirm, but includes the info the person sent to me through the form, just in case it's wrong or something. Then they can send me a correction, if they want to. Or, if they never hear back, they can then reply to the email to tell me I'm an idiot because I didn't reply, though I try not to let that happen.

With professional things I have a help desk so it sends out a unique ID response so they can track it. This has come in handy when I replied, they didn't receive it for some reason and they checked the status on their own. There are some free ones like that.
Otherwise, I would go with the script that has "do you want a copy sent to you as well?" and leave the choice up to the client if they desire a confirmation. I found people prefer a response than confirmation...they don't question whether their email was received until the response has not been received within their expectation time.

yeah I think for the dummy-users(Noobs) on the internet an auto-reply makes them feel a little more comfy with the idea that if they received an notification you for sure got the send question/inquiry.
They know the application actually worked and don't resend you the same question every 2 hours. (Just to force you to give them some attention.)
